Movie review: Dumb and Dumber To

By | November 15, 2014

Overall, a bit bland, with only a few laugh out loud moments. This is yet another comedy ruined due to the best bits being shown in the commercials and trailers. As soon as they set up the joke, you already know what the punchline will be. On the other hand, if the film was funny enough, there still would be more than enough jokes left that weren’t shown in the ads. Unfortunately, these are few and far between. The overall story takes a little too long to get going, but finds a descent groove after a while. Things get a bit convoluted near the end, and the climax feels rushed. The straddles a fine line between an homage to the first film and just repeating themselves, and for the most part, the do a good job. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are somewhat underwhelming. Like the actors themselves, their characters antics show signs of aging. Most of the new cast does a fair job of supporting the leads, and Rachel Melvin’s Penny is the most likable of the bunch, even though her story could’ve used a better payoff. There is a post credits scene that fans of the first film may want to stick around for.
