I did my best to avoid movies that I thought looked terrible, so these are the 5 movies I liked the least this year. Click here to watch the expanded version on YouTube 5. Halloween (2018) – A mediocre sequel that never justifies being made. The story isn’t much different than the original, aside from… Read More: My Top 5 Worst Films of 2018 »
Fantastic animation, great character moments, and a good amount of humor create one of the best Spider-Man experiences in years. It’s the sights and sounds that really set the mood here. The animation is unique, sometimes trippy, but is almost like a character of its own. While the character designs are kind of simple, there’s… Read More: Movie Review: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse »
Watch my SPOILER review on YouTube A visually stunning action film, that overreaches a bit too much, but still finds enough emotional beats to ground the spectacle. There is an amazing amount of design work that makes it on screen. From the sea life to the fictitious underwater kingdoms, there is no lack of attention… Read More: Movie Review: Aquaman »
An extremely predictable sequel that is saved by strong performances. The first “Creed” suffered from going a predictable route, and the sequel doubles up on that. A half an hour into the film, I already knew all the broad strokes that the plot would deliver. An aside from a few slight deviations, I saw everything… Read More: Movie Review: Creed II »
A mediocre film that is only salvaged by beautiful-production designs and a couple of strong performances. The biggest issue with this movie is that a whole lot of nothing is going on. It just feels like it’s spinning its wheels, and it becomes obvious that they’re not even building towards a big climax. Instead, they’re… Read More: Movie Review: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald »
An overall entertaining film that starts strong, but stumbles to the finish line. The opening moments give a taste about what works for this movie. There are strong levels of grittiness, tension and violence that keep you on edge. They also do a great job of establishing characters and giving them defining characteristics. And unlike… Read More: Movie Review: Overlord »
An unfocused, but occasionally brilliant film about one of the all-time great rock bands, that tends to feel more music video than music documentary. The pacing and tone are all over the place. It feels like only days pass between Freddie Mercury going from baggage handler to rock star. We only get the slightest taste… Read More: Movie Review: Bohemian Rhapsody »
A surprisingly uninspired reboot/sequel/addition to the “Halloween” franchise that never quite justifies its existence. The basics premise is that none of the sequels to the original “Halloween” ever happened. Nothing of interest has gone down since the original murders besides Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode going full Sarah Conners-mode and prepping for the day Michael… Read More: Movie Review: Halloween (2018) »
Watch my YouTube SPOILER talk here A fairly mediocre superhero film that is saved by a likable lead and a few solid action scenes. The film suffers from pacing issues, especially in the first act. It’s stop and go, and there’s a long stretch of nothing too interesting happening before it gets to the meat… Read More: Movie Review: Venom »
A solid action film that goes on just a bit too long and isn’t always as clever as it thinks it is. This movie absolutely delivers on the promise of great action sequences. Car chases, helicopter chases and hand to hand fights are thrilling to watch. Everything is well-shot and it’s clear to see what’s… Read More: Movie Review: Mission: Impossible – Fallout »
