Movie Review: Kingsman: The Secret Service

By | February 14, 2015

Some wild action and twisted humor make a mostly entertaining film. The general plot has been done many times, so there’s not much new here. The acting is solid, but there’s not any performance that stands out. The most polarizing character is played by Samuel L. Jackson, whose strange lisp and sideways baseball cap makes him seem cartoony. He also provides quite a few of the movie’s many profanities. The highlight of the film is its wild, and extremely graphic, violence. This includes gun play that is so fluid that it’s almost dance-like. Like other films by Mathew Vaughn, there’s an odd, British-flavored humor to it. At points, things get almost too over the top, particularly with a strange sequence involving exploding heads.

***1/2 out of *****
