With great looking visuals and a strong concept, “Nope” is unable to live up to its lofty goals due to a disjointed narrative and characters that take too long to endear themselves to the audience. The plot is relatively simple, but there’s a strange execution to it, with chapter headings that don’t really seem to mean much and a disturbing sequence that seems important but never pays off. While the acting is solid, the lead characters don’t quite connect, as OJ is a man of too few words and Em comes off as unlikable and only out for herself. Jordan Peele has once again come up with an interesting concept, and it’s shockingly dark at points. But, while the direction the story takes makes sense, it’s an odd choice and just doesn’t quite payoff.
