A twenty-year wait for a sequel to “Independence Day” is rewarded with a weak new chapter that attempts to hide its lack of originality by just making everything bigger. The spaceship is bigger. The alien is bigger. The swath of destruction is bigger. While some of the grand spectacle works, most of it brings nothing new to the genre. Unlike the first film, there’s nothing iconic here that will be remembered as far as the visual effects go. That just leaves the lackluster story and an uninteresting cast. Most of the returning cast members feel shoehorned in, and it’s obvious that they struggle to finds something for them to do. This includes a completely pointless subplot featuring Judd Hirsh’s character and some stranded children. The new cast is mainly made up of good-looking twenty somethings, and with the exception of Liam Hemsworth, none of them generate much interest. They make an attempt to squeeze in backstories for the new characters, but there’s just not enough to make us care.
